The practicalities

What to wear

We love to get messy and have fun at Pre-School so I will start by suggesting not to dress your child in their best clothes! The children will be using different equipment such as climbing frames, play tunnels, sand, water, bikes and slides (just to name a few) so we ask that you please dress them in something comfortable for their day with us.

We encourage the children to develop their independence skills and one way in which we do this is by giving them the chance to dress themselves which includes putting their own shoes on and off. We please ask that you send them in shoes that they can give this a go at without it being too tricky! (Even we struggle to get their feet into converse style trainers so they will too!).

We free flow between our indoor and outdoor area everyday no matter what the weather! So, a coat on a day its cold and wet would be needed and some wellies (wellies can stay at the setting to ensure they are always available). Any other clothing for the super cold days would be ideal to i.e. hats, gloves, scarfs.

In the summer we will need a sun hat (labelled) and labelled sun-cream.

Please could you apply sun-cream to your child before they attend their session and we can re-apply when or if necessary.

If your child wears nappies we ask that you provide these, either the amount we will need for the day in their bag, or a full bag of nappies for us to keep at the setting. We also ask that you provide wipes (you can do the same with these). Please can you ensure your child has spare clothes even if they are in nappies just in-case!

  • If your child stays for lunch with us, you will need to provide them with a packed lunch in a labelled lunchbox. If you have packed food that needs to be kept cool, please also put an icepack in the lunchbox. We will provide cups of water during lunch time to encourage them to drink from open topped cups. We ask that you have a look at our Healthy Eating Policy (a member of staff will grab you one if you ask!). Details and advice on healthy eating is available on our notice board in the entrance to Pre-School.

  • If your child is unwell or unable to attend a session please let us know by phone on the pre-school phone number 0115 9452627 or email on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

If your child has suffered sickness or diarrhoea, they will not be able to attend pre-school until they have been well for 48 hours.

At home time please be prompt, but if a delay is inevitable it would be helpful if you could ring and let us know. If you fail to collect your child at the end of a session and have not contacted us, we will follow our policy on late collection of children.

Please feel free to contact us for any more information about our pre-school on the above numbers or visit our website www.thearkpre-school.co.uk

  • On arrival children will have a small wooden disk hanging on our Pre-School family tree with their name and photo on for them to collect for self-registration. They will also have a peg with their name and photograph on to hang their coat and other belongings.

Also on arrival we would ask you to inform us if your child has suffered any injuries outside of the setting as we will need to record it as part of our safeguarding children policy.

At home time we will bring the children to the entrance for you to collect from there. This way we can control the rush of children excited to see their parents, and gives us opportunity to wait behind if we would like to have a chat with you, and also for you to do the same if you wish to speak with us.

If you will not be collecting your child at the end of the day we ask you to inform us who it will be as you drop off your child when you drop them off that morning. If that person is not down as an alternative contact on your registration form, we will need details and a password to clarify identification. At home time please be prompt, but if a delay is inevitable it would be helpful if you could ring and let us know. If you fail to collect your child at the end of a session and have not contacted us, we will follow our policy on late collection of children.

What's in the bag?

Here is a list of all the things you need to consider that your child might need:

  • A bag to put their stuff in
  • Spare clothes (in-case of accidents, nappy leaks, or messy play!) especially socks during the colder days!
  • Coat/Jacket
  • Wellies (ideally a pair to keep at the setting)
  • Gloves, hat, scarf
  • Sun hat
  • Sun cream
  • Nappies and wipes
  • Water bottle (labelled)

Please can you ensure you label any belongings to help us keep on top of whose is whose! If things are not labelled, we may write your child’s name on them to ensure things are not getting lost of misplaced in other children’s bags.
